Politics Plus held a special reception in Parliament Buildings on Tuesday 28 June 2016 to recognise and celebrate the work of local Members of the UK Youth Parliament (MYPs). The reception allowed the Speaker of the Assembly and other MLAs to congratulate the newly elected young people to their role as representatives of the UK Youth Parliament.
Speaking at the reception, The Speaker of the Assembly said: ‘I want to carry on the work to involve young people like you in the mainstream business of this Assembly. I have no doubt that our committees would welcome contributions from young people more often on their inquiries, and not just stereo-typical young people’s issues. I know you have a lot to contribute so I want to ensure your voice is able to be heard widely across all the areas for which this Assembly has responsibility’.
As well as the Speaker, attendees heard from Brendan McGowan from the British Youth Council who wished Members of the UK Youth Parliament well in their new roles. Darragh O’Reilly, MYP for Fermanagh and South Tyrone also spoke of the role of the recently elected MYPs and their hopes going forward.
The reception concluded with a brainstorming session between MYPs and MLAs setting out ideas on how the work of Members of the Youth Parliament can be taken forward.
Politics Plus intends to work with MYPs to help take forward some of this work and in particular the role of engagement between MYPS and MLAs.
