Politics Plus are delighted to host its biannual Ambassadors’ Forum on Friday 23rd June 2017 in Parliament Buildings.
The Forum has been designed to provide a platform for collaboration between politicians, experts and leaders of the public and third sector, to support the promotion of women in political and public life and progressing the gender parity. The collective work of Politics Plus and the wider Northern Ireland Assembly, has proved successful in furthering gender equality.
The upcoming Ambassadors’ Forum will include prominent guest speakers:
Yasmin Ratansi MP was the first Muslim woman in North America to be elected to a Parliament in 2004. A member of the Liberal Party, Yasmin has served in the Canadian House of Commons from 2004-2011 and again since 2015, representing the riding of Don Valley East, Toronto.
Both in business and in politics, Yasmin is considered by many to be a visionary and principled change-leader. Her personal skills and worldview combine to give her the ability to apply her strong business and political acumen and global perspective, to fortify and strengthen pluralism and diversity. Yasmin is regarded as one of the most interculturally competent people around.
Besides being the first Muslim woman to be elected in North America, Yasmin has also set the bar on many firsts:
First to win the riding of Don Valley East during a Minority Government;
First to be the only federal Opposition member to Chair two Standing Committees;
First to secure government funding, in the amount of $30 million, for the Global Centre for Pluralism in Ottawa.
During her tenure in Parliament, Yasmin has worked with Parliamentarians around the globe on numerous issues of concern to Canada and its partners. Some of the issues she has addressed include the correlation between poverty and corruption, donor fatigue, environmental degradation, women and human rights.
Ms Eileen Mullan is the founder of Strictly Boardroom, a Governance Practitioner, TEDx Speaker, and holds Non-Executive Director roles to include Chair of Age NI, Member of Northern Ireland Committee for the Big Lottery Fund, the Health and Care Professions Council and Southern Health and Social Care Trust. Eileen encourages us to identify what matters to us so that we may embrace our civic responsibility for Playing Our Part.
This event will also include a panel of Northern Ireland MLAs who wish to hear your views on how to support gender parity through break-out sessions as part of the Ambassadors’ Forum. The round-table discussions will explore possible solutions and initiatives to dispel gender inequality.
