This is an extremely important aspect of the work of MLAs – the consideration and passing legislation is their primary role as Members of the Legislative Assembly. However, MLAs are not elected one day and then wake up the next as experts on legislation, public finance, or the many and varied areas over which the Assembly has competence.
As a result, Politics Plus provides both induction sessions and on-going training to increase MLAs’ knowledge and skills in this regard, for example though sessions on ‘Understanding the Legislative Process from Bill to Act’ and ‘Effective Legislative Scrutiny’.
In addition to providing training for Members on an individual basis, experts work with each Committee as a whole to ensure that they are maximising their effectiveness though successful teamwork and strategic questioning. The overarching goal is to enhance democracy by enabling Members to fully and robustly scrutinise the work of the Executive.
