About the Event

The US:NI Youth Leadership Initiative is a collaborative one year project involving the U.S. Consulate, Politics Plus and the Northern Ireland Assembly. This programme aims to empower a new generation of Millennials (18-25 years old) and encourage them to engage more in civic activism and democracy. The initiative will build on an influential and enthusiastic alumni base in Northern Ireland and will also involve young leaders from the Republic of Ireland.

This programme will be delivered through a series of workshops. The project will also help strengthen cross-border relations between young people in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Workshops will be held in collaboration with all 11 councils of Northern Ireland including the 4 cities of Belfast, Derry/Londonderry, Armagh, and Newry. Each workshop aims to reach a total of 75-100 targeted young people. These workshops will include direct mentoring by our exchange program alumni e.g. International Visitor Program Alumni (IVPL) and American Council of Young Political Leaders (ACYPL), in addition to a number of presentations by key civic leaders.

Following these workshops, each attendee will be asked to highlight a local civic issue or problem in their area that they feel politics can potentially change.

Panelists will include Quintin Oliver, an internationally renowned political strategist who has worked in other parts of Europe, the Middle East and South America.

Globally recognised personal development guru Billy Dixon will also be involved, as well as a number of young leaders from across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Some local politicians from the area will also participate.

Each of the 11 workshops will firstly cover “What Politics Means to me”, which will involve a panel discussion of four political alumni, outlining why they entered politics and how constituents can help them shape policy.

Quintin Oliver will deliver a session on “Grassroots Activism and Lobbying”. Following this, members of the U.S. Embassy Dublin’s Youth Council will draw on its success to share the experience of young people’s activism in the Republic of Ireland.

Billy Dixon will close the workshops with his session “Developing the Leader You”.
